Tanya is the fundamental work of Chabad Chasidus. Lubavitcher Rebbe has written that The Tanya is a collection of advice, given in answer to the queries of Chasidim in private audiences in the years 5540-5550. In the summer of 5552 the Alter Rebbe began to arrange the Tanya in the form now before us.

Tanya has three names: Tanya, after its first word; Likkutei Amarim, Collected Sayings after its sources, the teachers of the Alter Rebbe and the printed works of earlier eras; and Sefer Shel Benonim, Book of the Intermediate Persons, after its content: the spiritual of "intermediate", complete and joyous fulfillment of the Torah and its commandments motivated by knowledge of G-d.

The Kehot edition contains the booklet of supplements compiled by the Lubavitcher Rebbe, including the daily schedule of learning, indexes, a list of Hebrew abbreviations found in Tanya, and much more.
