Rav Moshe Ben Chayim Alshich was born in Adrianople in 1508 and died in Damascus around 1600. Ordained by Rav Yosef Karo, he served as Rabbi in both Safed and Damascus. Although he composed numerous responsa, his fame spread due to his eloquence as a darshan (preacher). He was very likely the most popular darshan of his century. This Torah commentary is based on the sermons he delivered throughout his long career. He also wrote commentaries on almost the entire Tanach (Torah, Prophets and Holy Writings). His allegorical method of interpretation, coupled with meticulous attention to every detail in the written text, represents a happy medium between the rational and mystical approaches. He emphasizes first and foremost the Mussar, the moral ethical lessons, that can be gleaned from the Torah.
